Job Description

Netflix is the leading online video subscription service, reaching millions of US and international households.  Netflix became well known as a data driven company for our personalized recommendations and our use of data doesn't stop there.  From testing new features for the site to measuring performance across many devices to making wise choices about content, we use our petabytes of data to deliver greater experiences for our viewers. To do that we have built a big data platform that, along with the rest of our infrastructure, lives in the cloud and will continue to grow with us as we expand.
This platform is used by engineers, analysts and data scientists to leverage our data to do interesting and impactful analysis and allow Netflix to continue to innovate. The Data Experience team is working to make it as easy and efficient as possible to work with all of this data. We’re building a cohesive experience to make information more accessible, insightful and actionable by improving discovery, surfacing context and enabling self-service.
Our team contributes to Jupyter, IPython, nteract, Apache Toree, Apache Spark, and other open source projects in use at Netflix. We strike a balance between delivering quickly for Netflixers and providing long term value in open source. As part of the team you will evolve these tools in a dynamic environment, incorporating feedback from data scientists, statisticians, and engineers at Netflix.

What will you be doing?

    • Develop React components and reactive applications for literate computing
    • Automate orchestration of containerized notebook environments
    • Contribute to formats and protocols to further the Jupyter ecosystem
    • Improve the ease and access to tooling around interactive computing
    • Accelerate the development and production cycles within notebooks and generally across the data platform
    • Evangelize our paved path to data engineers and provide support for the solutions you build
    • Develop libraries to interact between Jupyter kernels (Python, Scala, R) and the frontend (JavaScript), providing rich ways of visualizing, interacting with, and consuming information

Who are you?

    • Although you understand and value analytics in all its forms, you thrive at the intersection between big data and user experience
    • You are a passionate advocate for the analyst’s experience. You identify, and relentlessly pursue, opportunities to simplify all phases of the notebook development lifecycle
    • You love freedom and hate being micromanaged. Given context, you're capable of self-direction
    • You deliver results quickly with iteration, instead of waiting for perfection, and you actively solicit feedback
    • You seek to constantly improve your knowledge of existing technologies and explore new ones
    • You create code that is simple to understand and maintain, and you take pride in its quality
    • You love embracing functional and reactive programming
    • You seek to share knowledge with others openly, broadly, and deliberately
    • You can balance between existing code bases in production and new developments that build on top of it

What do you know? (This is not a rigorous litmus test.)

    • You have worked with notebooks to explore data and disseminate results
    • You understand Hadoop technologies and data engineering concepts, and you have written or supported batch ETL jobs in a distributed environment (e.g. Spark or Dask)
    • You have achieved mastery of at least one major programming language -- bonus points if it’s Python, JavaScript, or Scala
    • You have worked within a virtualized, containerized, and/or cloud computing environment
    • You understand how to work and effectively communicate with both analytics practitioners and engineers
    • Bonus: You grok the ZeroMQ guide
    • Bonus: You have written reusable ETL components using Python or similar language -- such as UDFs, job orchestration, data quality, lifecycle management, or similar functionality

We need you to bring strong development expertise and an appreciation for delivering delightful designs to help us build meaningful solutions. You will need an excellent ability to communicate across our team and the organization. Your experience can come from a variety of places including work experience, formal or informal education. You will have ample opportunities to grow professionally, to contribute both inside and outside of Netflix, and to enable Netflix to bring moments of joy around the world.
We are an equal opportunity employer and value diversity at our company. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, or disability status.
